Rashmika Mandanna and Vijay Deverakonda's appearance on Koffee With Karan 9 has started another debate about celebrity relationships. After the couple discussed their journey towards marriage, some viewers began questioning Vijay's attitude and calling him a “red flag.”

For Bollywood fans, the controversy may feel familiar.

In 2023, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh faced a similar wave of scrutiny after speaking about the early days of their relationship on the same show.

The situations were different. So were the people being criticised. But both episodes raised an interesting question: why do we feel so comfortable judging a relationship after watching only a small part of it?

Rashmika wanted marriage. Vijay needed more time.

During their October 21, 2026 episode, Rashmika revealed that she had repeatedly asked Vijay about getting married for an entire year. Vijay recalled telling her to ask him a hundred times before they seriously considered the decision. For some viewers, the story sounded uncomfortable. They questioned why Rashmika had to raise the subject so often and whether Vijay's response showed enough respect for her feelings.

Those concerns became part of a wider social media debate about their relationship. But the longer conversation offered important context. Vijay explained that he considered marriage a major life decision. He wanted to know whether their relationship could remain strong through difficult days, changing emotions and professional pressures. He described the process as testing himself and the relationship.

Rashmika also explained that she understood his thinking, even though she had already made up her mind. There was another detail in their story. Vijay eventually organised a proposal during their wedding celebrations in Udaipur, going down on one knee in front of their friends during the sangeet festivities.

The couple married on February 26, 2026.

None of these details automatically proves that every part of their relationship is perfect. But they do show why a single exchange cannot tell the entire story.

Deepika's experience was almost the opposite

When Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh appeared on Koffee With Karan 8 in October 2023, their conversation brought a different kind of controversy. Deepika explained that after difficult past relationships, she had wanted to remain single and avoid rushing into another commitment. She shared that she and Ranveer were not initially in an exclusive relationship and were free to meet other people. But she also explained that she kept returning to Ranveer and felt emotionally connected to him.

The admission sparked criticism online, with some viewers questioning her approach to commitment. Yet their episode contained much more than that one discussion. Deepika and Ranveer shared footage from their 2018 wedding for the first time. They also spoke about the emotional support Ranveer offered when Deepika was struggling with her mental health.

Those moments revealed another side of their shared history, one built around support, patience and years of experiences together. But online debates often reduced their conversation to the question of whether Deepika had been serious enough about Ranveer from the beginning.

Two different choices, but the same pressure to explain love

There is an interesting contrast between the two stories. Rashmika knew she wanted marriage and openly expressed it. Deepika initially wanted more time before making an exclusive commitment. One woman was ready to move forward. The other described a period when she was not ready. Neither approach tells us, on its own, whether a person is a good partner.

People do not always reach emotional decisions at the same speed. Some know early that they want to marry. Others need time to understand what commitment means to them. What matters is how those differences are handled, whether both people feel respected and whether their decisions are made honestly. And those are difficult things to measure from a television appearance.

When a few seconds become a permanent label

The language of “red flags” and “green flags” can be useful when people discuss behaviour, honesty and personal boundaries. But these terms can also become shortcuts. A comment that sounds awkward may be interpreted as proof of a troubled relationship. A romantic gesture may be celebrated as proof of a perfect one. Neither conclusion is necessarily fair.

Celebrity interviews are especially complicated because people are responding to questions, recalling memories and sometimes joking in front of cameras. A short clip gives viewers even less information. Tone, earlier remarks and later explanations may be missing. That does not mean public figures should be protected from criticism. If a statement sounds disrespectful, viewers have every right to discuss it.

But questioning someone's words is different from claiming to understand their entire private relationship. Even a complete talk-show episode offers only the part of a couple's life they choose to share.

Maybe the problem is our expectation of perfect love stories

Celebrity couples are often expected to tell beautiful, effortless love stories. We enjoy hearing about unforgettable proposals, romantic gestures and the moment two people realised they belonged together. But real relationships can involve uncertainty, disagreements and different expectations. When celebrities admit that love was not always simple, their honesty can quickly become a controversy. There is something worth thinking about here.

We say we want celebrities to be genuine. Yet when they describe experiences that do not fit our preferred idea of romance, we sometimes judge them for being too open. Rashmika and Vijay's story is not Deepika and Ranveer's story. Their experiences should not be treated as identical. But both remind us that a relationship is more complicated than the moment that goes viral.

At Eroszooming, we believe meaningful conversations about relationships should leave room for context, respect and individual choices. We can discuss what celebrities say without deciding who they are behind closed doors. Because Koffee With Karan may give us a glimpse into someone's love story. It cannot give us the whole story.
